Port Vila is the capital of the Republic of Vanuatu and one of its two largest cities. Lying in the southwest of the third biggest island of the country, it covers an area of 23.06 square kilometers and has a population of 44,000.

Port Vila is Vanuatu’s political, economic, cultural and shipping center, where there is a concentration of financial, commercial, educational, public health and tourism facilities. Its economy is dominated by the tertiary industry, which attracts tourists from around the world with beautiful natural scenery and complete services and all the necessary facilities. Port Vila is connected with Australia and New Zealand by scheduled flights.

On 8 June 1994, Shanghai and Port Vila officially became sister-cities. In commemoration of their friendly relations, Shanghai put up a fountain in Port Vila in 1996, which is now a tourism landmark in the city. Shanghai helped build an arts & crafts market, named “Shanghai Market”, in Port Vila and presented to it a batch of traffic sign boards in 2007 and 2014 respectively.
