In September 2002, the Shanghai Library and the Deban Library in South Africa signed the Memorandum of Friendship and Cooperation, launching the first international journey of the "Window of Shanghai". Since then, the "Window of Shanghai", a cultural exchange brand of the Shanghai Library based on book exchanges, supported by various cultural activities and aimed at promoting the traditional Chinese culture, has emerged to meet the demands of the new era.
Over the past two decades, the "Window of Shanghai" has focused its work on the library field, serving the country’s diplomatic strategy and urban development. Under the leadership of the Publicity Department of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, the Shanghai Municipal Foreign Affairs Office, the Shanghai Municipal Publicity Office, the Shanghai Friendship Association and other institutions at all levels, it has made due contributions to telling the Chinese story to the world and promoting the Chinese culture.

Giving a Full Play to the Functions of Public Libraries and Establishing a Community of Cultural Exchanges with Chinese Characteristics
As of September 2022, the Shanghai Library has opened the "Window of Shanghai" in 177 libraries and institutions in 75 countries and regions on 6 continents. Over the past 20 years, the "Window of Shanghai" has donated more than 130,000 print books; the "Window of Shanghai" website provides about 30,000 titles of electronic books in Chinese, English, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean and other languages.
The cooperation cycle of the "Shanghai Window" is 3 years. There are 500 titles of books for the first donation, and about 100 books added every year. The list of donated books is available on the website of the "Window of Shanghai" for our partners to download and select books independently. The "Window of Shanghai" regularly collects feedbacks from partners in order to enhance its collection development.

Carrier 1 - "Shanghai Get-Together" Reading and Writing Contest
The "Shanghai Get-Together" International Reading and Writing Contest has been held for six times on the "Window of Shanghai" platform. This activity has promoted cultural exchanges between Shanghai and other cities around the world, and disseminated the traditional Chinese culture to the world.
The Shanghai International Library Forum, organized by the Shanghai Library, has received supports from world library professionals since its inception. This high-level international forum organized in China has been held for ten times, and every forum attracted library representatives from dozens of countries and regions. The 11th Forum will be held soon.

In 2004, the "Window of Shanghai" entered the "China Book International (CBI)" project of the State Council Reform Office, and was first settled in the Alexandria Library of Egypt as a municipal foreign exchange project in the same year;In 2008, it became a partner with the Confucius Institute in the Edinburgh University for the first time;In 2011, the "Window of Shanghai" entered the Chinese Cultural Center in Paris, France;
In June 2017, Han Zheng, then Secretary of Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, paid a special visit to the "Window of Shanghai" at Sino-Italian Design Exchange Center in Florence, Italy;In February 2022, Gong Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai, made a video connection with Aaron Hawkins, Mayor of Dunedin, New Zealand, to witness the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation for the "Window of Shanghai" between the Shanghai Library and the Dunedin Public Library in New Zealand.
